The curriculum covers 10 semesters of study. The total set of courses corresponds to 300 ECTS or teaching units. The curriculum includes required courses, required elective courses (from other Departments also), a research thesis and a diploma thesis. A necessary number of core courses is further combined with the possibility to choose elective courses allowing students to customize their curriculum according to their special interests developed along the studies and beyond.
The mission of the Department is to cultivate and to promote Architectural Engineering through academic and applied research and so to provide the students with the assets that are necessary to ensure thorough training for their professional career and scientific development.
The architect is able to study in depth the formed relationship between human and space, and to organize the programmatic activities on large and small size ranging from the urban scale and the public space to housing, interior space and object design. Architect follows the principles of art and science to ensure functionality, durability and aesthetic perfection of the built structures. More specifically, the subject field of the Architect-Engineer consists of the design of individual buildings and building complexes, the design of the urban environment, the arrangement of man-made landscape and the protection of the natural environment, the restoration and the reuse of historical buildings, the sustainability and bioclimatic behavior of the buildings always in the context of individual fulfillment and social well-being.
The Department's faculty consists mainly of architects but also of artists, engineers, historians and social scientists.
Diploma
The Department awards the Diploma of Architect Engineer which is a combined professional degree equivalent to an integrated postgraduate level (integrated master), in the specialty of Architect, according the Level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Framework.
Learning Objectives
The curriculum of the Department strategically aims at acquiring the knowledge and skills described in the European Certificate Framework for professional rights for architects corresponding to the following categorization and organizational structure:
Architectural Composition
the ability to conceive architectural works that meet both aesthetic and technical requirements;
History and Theory
appropriate knowledge of the history and the theories of architecture as well as related arts, technologies and human sciences;
Fine Arts
knowledge of fine arts as influential factors of the quality of architectural concepts and compositions;
Urban Planning
sufficient knowledge of urban planning and applied techniques of the urban planning process;
Integration to the Built Environment
ability to understand the relationships, on the one hand, between people and architectural projects, and on the other hand, between architectural projects and their context, as well as the ability to develop harmonious relationship between architecture and space corresponding to the human needs and the design scale;
Social Dimension of the Design
ability to understand the profession of the architect and its social responsibility, in particular through the information of the design by social factors;
Design Brief
knowledge of the methods of documentation and preparation of the on-site construction study;
Constuction
knowledge of construction problems, construction design and civil engineering associated with the design;
Indoor Environment (thermal, visual & acoustic comfort)
sufficient knowledge of problems related to the physical behaviour of buildings, the built-in technologies and performance, with a focus on internal comfort and microclimate moderation;
Building Technology
technical construction skills by which the architect invents original structural solutions that correspond to special requirements also with respect to budget constraints and building regulation codes;
Regulation codes - Legislation
knowledge of industries, organizations, regulations and procedures related to the implementation of the design and the integration of architectural drawings to the general planning;
Professional Prospects of the Graduates
The range of knowledge and skills provided by the architecture studies broadly expands the employment options from the creative field of art to the applied field of construction. The applied architecture consisting of the design and the supervision of the construction stands as the main professional career in our country. However, design is an activity that is not limited to buildings, expanding from public space to everyday objects. Nowadays, this polyvalent activity is being carried out seriously by architects in Greece. In addition, the graduates of Greek schools and departments of architecture excel in both the professional and academic international setting, as they are generally involved across the whole intellectual spectrum from theory to the construction industry.
The graduates of the Department of Architecture become registered members of the Technical Chamber of Greece as they participate successfully in the related examinations granting a Professional License. The five-year study program, the completion of the Research Thesis and the Diploma Design Thesis, but also the continuous reformation of the curriculum in collaboration with the Technical Chamber ensure the quality of education of the young architects in the University of Ioannina.
